The Shire

Project: Architectural Heritage

Nestled within a historic Oxford property once owned by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Shire draws on the home’s rich heritage while embracing a distinctly modern approach to kitchen design. Creating a space that feels both rooted in its surroundings and perfectly suited to family life.

Showstopping Porcelain Worktop

Dark stained oak cabinetry establishes a strong architectural presence throughout the room, creating a rich and sophisticated backdrop for the striking Infinity Royal Peacock polished worktops. The dramatic movement of the stone brings depth, texture and individuality to the design, while the expansive waterfall island forms the heart of the kitchen, providing generous space for cooking, entertaining and everyday gathering.

Design Details

Carefully considered details elevate the scheme throughout, from the Armac Martin Carlton and Lincoln handles in bronze to the refined material palette and bespoke joinery. Flooded with natural light from overhead roof glazing, the space feels open and inviting despite its darker tones.

Fluted Glass Pantry

Designed for clients who love to host and with a keen baker in mind, a generous walk-in pantry provides valuable additional storage and preparation space, helping to keep the main kitchen organised and clutter-free. Concealed behind a beautifully crafted fluted glass door, the pantry introduces texture and visual interest while allowing light to flow through the space.

Smoked Oak Utility

The adjoining utility room continues the home’s refined material palette, combining smoked oak and Oxford Stone cabinetry to create a practical space that is beautifully considered. Tongue and groove panelling adds warmth and character, while a built-in bench seat provides a convenient spot for changing shoes, storing everyday essentials and transitioning from outdoors to in.
